Year 5 News Feed: What is your staus?

    By  and

In Year 5, students have amazing thoughts on their minds. To share these with our classmates, Miss Lee and other teachers, we have our class news feed.  Each student has their photo on our class door.  Everyone has a spot to posts their status to our class news feed.

The status is a good way for teachers to find out what we are thinking about and try to make Year 5 a better place for us. In your status you can say what you want to happen in the year, what you have enjoyed about the day or week. The status can be creative as you want.  It is helpful as it allows other students to see what is on your mind.  We might even be able to help you complete your goal in Year 5.

Year 5 has this card to help us be Cyber Smart in what we say. Year 5 has THINK which stands for:
T= is it True?
H= is it Helpful?
I= is it Inspiring?
N= is it Necessary?
K= is it Kind?

Cluster Swimming Carnival

Cluster Swimming Carnival
By Sinead and Matthew D

On the 10th of February 2014 some swimmers from Year 5 represented Christ The King in the cluster swimming carnival.  The Year 5 representatives were:
Sinead: 50m butterfly.
Jamie: Junior relay.
Matthew D: 50m butterfly, 50m breaststroke, 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke and the senior relay.
Matthew K:  Junior relay, 50m freestyle.

The weather was a bit overcast and cold in the morning but got a little hotter during the day. The swimming carnival was held at Revesby swimming centre.

It was fun and everyone enjoyed themselves and had a go.

Congratulations to our swimming representatives!

Monet Style Lilies

Our Little Monet Art
By Jade and Georgia

We have created our very own Monet water lilies. We used orange, yellow, white, and red paint for the flowers. We also included green lily pads and a blue background for the water. (Some artists add green to the water).  Monet is an impressionist and his paintings are not clear and so we smudged our paintings so it looks fuzzy. We had three flowers to paint and cut them out when they dried up. We did the same with the lily pad then stuck the flowers together and then put the lily pad under the flowers. We lifted the petals from the flowers to make a 3D effect.

Whole Number

Smartie Maths
by Jamie, Thomas, Matthew K and D

We are looking at whole number in Mathematics.  On Monday we did an exciting activity called smartie maths. First we opened a little box of smarties. Then we arranged the smarties from highest to smallest according to the number value. We arranged them according to the colour code for their place value e.g green=1.

For example these smarties have a number of
11, 051, 301.

Then we had to work out who had the highest number in year 5.  It was Matthew D with 52,123,200. Then we had to answer questions about the number for example we had to write the number in words and figure out the expanded notation for the number.  We also had to write 5 questions for a partner.

What did you learn from the Smartie Maths lesson?
