Cupcake Fractions and Ratios

Last Friday Miss Lee organised us some fun food activities. She bought cupcake mixes (chocolate and vanilla flavour) and green cordial. There were also other activities like the fraction flag activity. We were split into groups for the day when we did this.   

We made cupcakes using ratios and fractions.   

 

 

We had to mix some vanilla and chocolate then write the ratio and fraction for it. For example 3 spoons of chocolate and 1 spoon of vanilla. The ratio would be written like this 3:1 and the fractions ¾.  

We then did the same with the cordial 20 mL of cordial and 40 mL of water had 1 part cordial and 4 parts water.  It had a fraction of ⅕.

24 Hour Time

St Felix Maths Collaboration

During the last 2 weeks, Year 5 have been working hard on making 24 hour time resources for St Felix. The resources that were created were: a tutorial, 2 posters, 2 songs, a presentation, 2 games and a quiz. St Felix was learning about elapsed time and prepared questions for us. We communicated on google hang out and they shared their questions for us to figure out. We created a website that contain all our activities and St Felix had a look at the website. We had so much fun with St Felix, and learnt about elapsed time in a fun way. St Felix were very friendly towards us and repeated their question whenever we didn’t understand or hear clearly. Their questions were quite challenging , but we managed to figure out the answer using our brains, whiteboards (and sometimes calculators). We’d love to do another google hangout with St Felix someday. It’s an experience we’d never forget! :)

Monet Style Lilies

Our Little Monet Art

We have created our very own Monet water lilies. We used orange, yellow, white, and red paint for the flowers. We also included green lily pads and a blue background for the water. (Some artists add green to the water).  Monet is an impressionist and his paintings are not clear and so we smudged our paintings so it looks fuzzy. We had three flowers to paint and cut them out when they dried up. We did the same with the lily pad then stuck the flowers together and then put the lily pad under the flowers. We lifted the petals from the flowers to make a 3D effect.
