Fraction Maths

Chocolate Fractions

By Abby and Matt D
Our Year 5 class have been learning about fractions. Last Thursday we played the chocolate fractions game.  In the chocolate fractions game we had three chairs at  the front of our classroom with chocolate packs on them.  The first chair had one pack of chocolate. The second one had two chocolate packs on it and the third had three packs of chocolate. Year 5 had to pick which chair would give them the most amount of chocolate.

Kameron had the first choice and that was easy (he chose the seat with 3 packs).  From then on more students had the chance to come up to the front of the classroom to pick what chair they would get the most chocolate from.

We had whiteboards to see what fraction it would be, sometimes all the groups would have the same fraction which is called an equivalent fraction e.g 1/3,  2/6, 3/9. We would have to think and use our fraction brains to figure out the option would be the best and give us the most chocolate.

Which option you would choose?

Option 1- You would have 1/5 of the chocolate (1 bar)

Option 2- You would have 2/9 of the chocolate (1 1/9 bar)

Option 3- You would have 1/12 of the chocolate (1 3/12 bar)

Volume for St Felix

Volume Activities for St Felix
By Paul, Matt D and James

This past week, Year 5 have been learning about Volume. We were given the challenge to create some learning activities for Yr 5 from St Felix. We split into different groups. Some were doing volume and others did displacement. Everyone did an activity: some did game, a tutorial, a song and a quiz. We learnt about the formula of the volume of an object. We times the Length, Width and Height.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN Test!

By Matthew D and Stephanie

Year 5 started a massive test called NAPLAN that was done by children all around Australia. Some of the types of NAPLAN styles are language conventions, writing, reading and numeracy. A child has to complete NAPLAN if they are in years 3,5,7 and 9.

You  get your results later on in the year (September). You get 40 to 50 minutes to finish the test. You have to be silent during the test so the other children can have full concentration at all times.

The full NAPLAN takes a few days to finish because you have to do different tasks on different days. You have to either color in a bubble to pick your answer or you have to write the answer in the box. We also got sweets in every test we did :-).  They were waiting on our desk when we came in to the classroom.

WRITING

During writing we had to write an exposition or you can do a narrative about the topic that the you are given. It should be about 2-3 pages. You had 30 minutes to finish the test. We also got about 5 minutes for planning and about 5 minutes for editing.

LANGUAGE CONVENTIONS

During language conventions we needed to answer 51 questions. We are not allowed to say what the questions were, but a majority of students from our class thought it was pretty easy. We had 40 minutes to complete the test and every one answered all the questions.

READING

During reading we needed to answer 38 questions. We had another book that we needed to look at the stories and then answer the questions. The was an easy one and every single student answered the questions. We had 50 minutes to finish the test.

NUMERACY

During numeracy we needed to answer 45 questions we had 40 minutes to finish the test. There were lots of different types of question e.g. The were graphs on who voted more on the topic, addition, subtraction, minus and division, there were some very hard questions and some super easy ones. We were very lucky to get some blank paper to do our working out on.

On the 10th of February 2014 some swimmers from Year 5 represented Christ The King in the cluster swimming carnival.  The Year 5 representatives were:

Jamie: Junior relay.
Matthew D: 50m butterfly, 50m breaststroke, 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke and the senior relay.
Matthew K:  Junior relay, 50m freestyle.

The weather was a bit overcast and cold in the morning but got a little hotter during the day. The swimming carnival was held at Revesby swimming centre.

Whole Number

Smartie Maths
by Jamie, Thomas, Matthew K and D

We are looking at whole number in Mathematics.  On Monday we did an exciting activity called smartie maths. First we opened a little box of smarties. Then we arranged the smarties from highest to smallest according to the number value. We arranged them according to the colour code for their place value e.g green=1.

For example these smarties have a number of
11, 051, 301.

Then we had to work out who had the highest number in year 5.  It was Matthew D with 52,123,200. Then we had to answer questions about the number for example we had to write the number in words and figure out the expanded notation for the number.  We also had to write 5 questions for a partner.

What did you learn from the Smartie Maths lesson?
