The Australian Gold Rush

Rendered Image
We have been learning about the gold rush in Australia. We have learnt lots of things about the gold rush such as:

  • Near the end of September 1851, there were about 10,000 people digging for gold near ballarat.
  • The most popular goldfields were Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie.
  • The ophir mine was near a waterhole.
  • Gold was valued from $12,00 to $35 .00 an ounce.
  • Women did do mining later on in the gold rush and women used to entertain men while they were digging.
  • Gold seekers must pay for a licence in order to dig for Gold.
  • Food cost a lot because so much people were getting gold.

What interesting facts have you found out so far?

Yr 5's Gold Rush

GOLD HUNT
Yr5 had a spectacular gold hunt and we found lots of golden nuggets which was chocolate gold coins and had a very fun time finding it.

We did the gold hunt so we can feel how the gold miners felt like when they found golden nuggets.
It was really fun but some had more than others but in the end we all shared golden chocolate coins.

Before we shared the golden coins we had to take a vote between sharing it fairly or keep what you have,
but sharing it fairly had the most votes.

Only some people who have the coins put up their hand to keep what they have but the rest put their hand up to share it fairly.
It was finally done but still some people was moaning and groaning about how unfair it was because other people had more than they did.

Bankstown Council Excursion

On Wednesday the 23rd of July Year 5 and Year 6 went to Bankstown council. We learnt about safety rules such as:
  • You are not allowed to put your rubbish on the side of the road
  • You are not allowed to park your car on a no stopping sign
  • If you go more than a 40 km per hours in a school zone the you will get a penalty of over thousands of dollars or hundreds.

We also participated in a role play about how the councillors vote on a decision. The parts of the role play are the troublemaker (Gabby),the guards (Jade and Jason), the mayor (Georgia) and the 12 councillors (Emily, Gabby, Lilly, Sinead, Ryley, Matthew.D, Jack, Meg, Christopher, Angela, Angelica).

After that, we went to the new library and had a scavenger hunt. We knew which book we had to find because the librarian gave us a tag which said the book name on it. If we couldn't find the book then there were some computers where we could search for the book that we needed. At the end 4 people read a book which had 4 different colours in it so 4 people could read it. Then we read another one.

When we left the librarian gave us a bag with a pencil a book and two pieces of paper in it. Then we went back to school and had music. :D

Year 5 thoughts about the excursion.
Stephanie: “I thought the best part of the excursion was the scavenger hunt at the library”.

Julie-Anne: “I thought the excursion was awesome and cool”.

Ashlia: I thought that it was awesome.

Sinead: It was fun and interesting.
Emily.N: I thought the excursion was fun and cool

Emily.B: I’d rate it a 7/10

24 Hour Time

St Felix Maths Collaboration
By Georgia and Clara

During the last 2 weeks, Year 5 have been working hard on making 24 hour time resources for St Felix. The resources that were created were: a tutorial, 2 posters, 2 songs, a presentation, 2 games and a quiz. St Felix was learning about elapsed time and prepared questions for us. We communicated on google hang out and they shared their questions for us to figure out. We created a website that contain all our activities and St Felix had a look at the website. We had so much fun with St Felix, and learnt about elapsed time in a fun way. St Felix were very friendly towards us and repeated their question whenever we didn’t understand or hear clearly. Their questions were quite challenging , but we managed to figure out the answer using our brains, whiteboards (and sometimes calculators). We’d love to do another google hangout with St Felix someday. It’s an experience we’d never forget! :)
