Constructive Feedback

By Abby, Vivian & Jamie
In Yr 5 we use constructive feedback to improve our work by getting feedback by other students in our class and our teacher. We started doing constructive feedback after watching a video about a boy called Austin. Austin is a 1st grader and had to draw a scientific butterfly and to accomplish that he used feedback from the other students.

First, we have to do constructive feedback-self you have to write your name, what draft number, then  you need to sign it, write the date, what is your learning goal, what you did well and what you need to improve on.

Next, you have to show your work to two of your friends so they could fill in the constructive Feedback-peer and then you use what they said you need to improve on e.g. If they told you to be more creative you could add some colour to your work.

Finally, you have to give your work to your teacher and they will fill in the constructive feedback-Teacher

Goal

A goal is your aim, or what you want to achieve.

The Australian Gold Rush

Rendered Image
We have been learning about the gold rush in Australia. We have learnt lots of things about the gold rush such as:

  • Near the end of September 1851, there were about 10,000 people digging for gold near ballarat.
  • The most popular goldfields were Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie.
  • The ophir mine was near a waterhole.
  • Gold was valued from $12,00 to $35 .00 an ounce.
  • Women did do mining later on in the gold rush and women used to entertain men while they were digging.
  • Gold seekers must pay for a licence in order to dig for Gold.
  • Food cost a lot because so much people were getting gold.

What interesting facts have you found out so far?

Matthew D: 50m butterfly, 50m breaststroke, 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke and the senior relay.

The weather was a bit overcast and cold in the morning but got a little hotter during the day. The swimming carnival was held at Revesby swimming centre.

Whole Number

Smartie Maths
by Jamie, Thomas, Matthew K and D

We are looking at whole number in Mathematics.  On Monday we did an exciting activity called smartie maths. First we opened a little box of smarties. Then we arranged the smarties from highest to smallest according to the number value. We arranged them according to the colour code for their place value e.g green=1.

For example these smarties have a number of
11, 051, 301.

Then we had to work out who had the highest number in year 5.  It was Matthew D with 52,123,200. Then we had to answer questions about the number for example we had to write the number in words and figure out the expanded notation for the number.  We also had to write 5 questions for a partner.

What did you learn from the Smartie Maths lesson?
